Senior Design Manager

Role Purpose

• Sr. Design managers coordinate all design matters relating to a project, helping to ensure that the multi-disciplinary teams building the project work together smoothly and that everything is delivered on time and within budget.

• Coordinating with Consultants, Contractors, Proponent and other stakeholders, to successfully deliver Building Projects. Coordinating, through the Project Director, with the respective Regional Proponent representatives.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES & ACTIVITIES

Key Responsibilities

• Having input into the tendering process .

• Coordinates execution of work assignment with respect to design approach, schedules, standards, budgets, and procedures to meet client scope of work requirements.

• Selecting, or having input into the selection of, specialist subcontractors or other organizations that will help complete the project work.

• Provides technical guidance to project design team in completing the most complex and difficult designs and layouts for complete systems and components of a project.

• Ensures compliance with required specifications, tolerances, safety factors, and industry codes, as well as client requirements and company standards.

• Manage a team of several designers, evaluating individual design deliverables and overall team performance. They also deliver critical feedback where needed and encourage team members throughout the duration of a project.

• Advising on the selection of materials used and other aspects of procurement

• Managing processes relating to the project's design to ensure that everything is delivered to schedule and budget, working very closely with estimators, quantity surveyors , site managers and other key members of the project team

• Reviewing and advising on designs, ensuring they meet regulatory and legislative requirements and the client’s brief

• Conducting financial, technical, and operational risk assessments and advising on risks, opportunities and potential hazards

• Keeping up to date with relevant regulations, codes and legislation

• Chairing design meetings, writing reports and giving presentations.

• Understands and applies commonly used company design standards and methods. Provides input to the establishment or revisions of guidelines and standards.

• Collaborates with Engineers and other engineering disciplines to ensure quality of design.

• Reviews supplier data and supplier/manufacturer drawings, as required.

• May train lower-level Designers/Engineer in various procedures.

• Other responsibilities as delated by the Project Director.

BACKGROUND, SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

• Relevant design management and technical experience.15+ years of related work experience, including supervisory/managerial experience.

• Robust personality who is able to manage senior stakeholders (internal and external) as well as leading a number of concurrent deliverables and deadlines.

• Able to proactively prevent issues as well as being adept in problem solving/providing innovative solutions.

• Independently taking the lead for all deliverables within their scope of work.

• Significant managerial experience across a large team of Engineers, Designers, and technical support personnel – both internal and external- directing work involving complex technical situations

• Experience across multiple disciplines/assets – industrial, infrastructure, buildings, etc.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering with a strong background in managing the technical design process across multiple work packages.
