HBKU comprises six colleges and three research institutes that collectively form the intellectual and scholarly makeup of the university.

Additionally, HBKU launched the Global Institute for Strategic Research (GISR) in 2023, a multidisciplinary think tank concerned with the global challenges of governance, advancement - defined as progress, prosperity, and development - and peace.

HBKU is characterized by its first-class integrated academic research programs in areas critical to the future of Qatar and its research productivity.

This is achieved through supporting the diversification of the economy, developing indigenous technologies for further development and commercialization by entrepreneurs, and graduating students from its academic programs tailored to Qatar's strategic economic and cultural needs.

A highly selective graduate research university, HBKU currently has more than 900 students among its 41 graduate degree offerings with an acceptance rate of less than 1%.

The university is looking to expand into the undergraduate educational space and anticipates having at least 6 undergraduate degrees within the next few years.

The research productivity of the faculty is recognized to be at the highest level in the MENA region.

Position

The Provost Office at HBKU is looking to hire for the position of Provost. Under the direction of and in collaboration with the President of HBKU, the Provost will be responsible for promoting high-quality faculty-driven scholarly endeavors to enhance the student experience and establish the university as a leading higher education institute globally. They will oversee and provide guidance for all academic activities, offering strategic direction and supervision to ensure academic excellence across the University.

Job Role Description

  • Provide overall inspirational and creative leadership across the entirety of university academic affairs.

  • In collaboration with the president, lead the planning, development, implementation, and assessment of all academic programs and academic-related research.

  • Uphold and enhance academic integrity, excellence in teaching, academic program research, scholarship, and service, ensuring alignment with operational standards.

  • Promote innovative interdisciplinary and entrepreneurship programs across the colleges.

  • Supervise all academic programs and support functions (including student recruitment and admission, academic records, and registration), faculty affairs (appointment and promotion policies), and compliance with national, international, and professional accreditation standards.

  • Lead the development of outstanding undergraduate, graduate, post-doctoral, and professional educational experiences that lead to successful outcomes for students.

  • Work with the President to build alliances and coordinate other mutually beneficial relationships with academic institutions, businesses, government agencies, and other stakeholders.

  • Direct resources towards developing an academic vision where enrollment, retention, and student success are top priorities at various education levels.

  • Work with the deans within the context of the university's strategic plan on priorities for the development of unit strategic, operational, and budgetary plans that stimulate academic excellence to ensure that programs and budgets reflect the strategic directions of the University.

  • Maintain highly effective working relationships with all deans, faculty, vice presidents, and administrators to advance the university's mission of achieving research excellence and globally recognized teaching.

  • Encourage and promote interdisciplinary teaching, research, and creative academic program development throughout the University while making use of the most effective new learning technologies and methods.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills & Experience

  • Have earned the rank of professor at an established well-recognized university.

  • PhD or a terminal degree in a relevant discipline from a well-recognized higher education institute.

  • 15-20 years of teaching, research, and university services experience at a large and complex educational institution with 5 years at a higher education senior leadership level.

  • Significant senior leadership experience at a complex higher education institution.

  • Exemplary leadership, planning, and management skills and the ability to lead and inspire faculty and academic staff.

  • Experience in managing significant budgets.

  • Track record of building partnerships and external relations with institutions and government officials.

  • Track record of attracting and retaining highly qualified faculty and students.

  • Exemplary oral and written communication skills; proficiency in Arabic desirable.

  • Ability to collaboratively lead and manage in a multi-national and multi-cultural environment with a high degree of cultural sensitivity.
