Job Description

Sidra Medicine, a state-of-the-art healthcare facility in Qatar, is seeking a skilled and experienced Technologist II to join their Virology team!

Summary:

This role plays a vital part in delivering high-quality virology services. You will be involved in various tasks, including commissioning laboratory equipment, training staff, performing viral cultures and analyses, and contributing to research on viral growth and evolution. You will also supervise other technologists and ensure the smooth operation of the virology section.

Responsibilities:

  • Participate in commissioning activities for the virology section, including equipment, IT systems, and staff recruitment/training.

  • Develop and implement policies and procedures according to regulatory standards (CAP, JCI).

  • Maintain adequate laboratory supplies for virology testing.

  • Culture and observe various viruses under different conditions (moisture, temperature, air) to understand factors affecting viral growth and spread.

  • Conduct research on viral evolution in populations.

  • Lead and supervise a team of technologists within the virology section.

  • Answer inquiries and communicate patient results to healthcare professionals (internal and external).

  • Provide technical advice on specimen handling to clinicians and nurses.

  • Oversee the efficient workflow within the section.

  • Assist the supervisor in implementing departmental decisions.

  • Collaborate effectively with other laboratory sections and staff.

  • Motivate staff to achieve high-quality work and contribute to the team.

  • Actively participate in the technical work of the section.

  • Manage laboratory information systems (LIS) for workload statistics and data queries.

  • Advise on the selection of new equipment in collaboration with the supervisor.

  • Perform all aspects of immunology/virology pre-batching, pooling, processing, result entry, equipment maintenance, and sample management.

  • Conduct routine and non-routine viral and antibody analyses using established protocols.

  • Monitor and advise on the use of reagents and consumables in the section.

  • Ensure the proper maintenance and safe use of laboratory equipment.

  • Review reports (batching, pooling, quality control) for accuracy and compliance with quality standards.

  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to optimize laboratory operations.

  • Identify opportunities for process and methodology improvements.

  • Schedule analytical activities to meet service requests and testing priorities.

  • Communicate laboratory issues and findings to the Lab Coordinator and stakeholders.

  • Utilize laboratory data systems for documentation, communication, and archiving of results.

  • Perform equipment calibrations, verifications, and maintenance tasks.

  • Document out-of-tolerance occurrences and take corrective actions following quality management procedures.

  • Network with other technical experts for problem-solving, knowledge sharing, and exploring new technologies.

  • Contribute to value creation by continuously improving analytical procedures, tools, and performance metrics.

  • Ensure data integrity, timely interpretation of results, and update databases.

  • Maintain a safe and clean working environment.

  • Proactively expand knowledge and develop expertise in additional laboratory techniques.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Laboratory Immunology/Virology, Biochemistry, Biology, or a related biological science field (required).

  • Minimum 5 years of experience working with advanced analytical laboratory equipment (liquid handlers, automatic pipettes, plate readers) (required).

  • Experience with laboratory information systems (LIS) (required).

  • Valid license to practice in the country of origin or practice (required).

  • Meets licensing requirements of the State of Qatar (required).

Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of ISO 15189/CPA/CAP/JCI standards and guidelines.

  • Team management experience.

  • Experience evaluating new technologies.

  • Proven ability to conduct meetings and deliver presentations.

  • Detail-oriented approach with a focus on accuracy.

  • Ability to manage schedules effectively.

  • Strong active listening skills.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Fluency in written and spoken English.

Sidra Medicine is a 400-bed women's and children's hospital, medical education and biomedical research center in Doha, Qatar. The hospital first opened its outpatient facility in 2016, followed by its inpatient hospital in January 2018. Qatar Foundation, a quasi-government organization, allotted a massive $7.9 billion budget for the hospital's construction. It first selected the center's contractors in 2008 but in 2014 assigned new contractors to complete the project. Biomedical research first began at Sidra in 2015. Outpatient care facilities and services were inaugurated in May 2016; as of 2018 there are at least 50 outpatient facilities. Throughout 2017, more than 25,000 people were treated at the hospital's outpatient clinic. On 14 January 2018, Sidra launched its inpatient hospital with 400 beds, treating 10 patients on its initial day of opening. The hospital is expected to become fully commissioned sometime in 2018, after the construction of an emergency department and the addition of further services.
