KEY ROLE ACCOUNTABILITIES
Under the supervision of the Child Life Specialists makes decisions related to implementing play programming for patients and families.
Makes recommendations regarding family centered care that support patients and families and collaborating staff/colleagues.
Makes recommendations to the Child Life Specialist/Supervisor regarding decisions that have a unit/service impact.
Responsible for maintaining up to date mandatory Life Support Training requirements as directed by MoPH and Sidra (e.g. BLS, AED etc).
Essential Function 1Under the supervision of the Child Life Specialist (I & II) and Child Life Supervisor, the Child Life Assistant is responsible to coordinate, support and execute safe play programs and interventions for patients and their families for areas of responsibility, including but not limited to playrooms/playgroups, bedside play, special events, inpatient activities.
Utilizes knowledge of child development (neonate to adolescent) and family-centered care to design and implement a range of therapeutic, expressive, and normalizing play experiences.
Assists the child life specialist in meeting psychosocial and developmental needs of children and families to reduce the stress and anxiety accompanying hospitalization and other health care encounters.
Assists in the implementation of therapeutic programs designed to meet the physical, emotional, social and cognitive needs of hospitalized children.
Assists in providing a program of individual and group play and therapeutic activities for children.
Enhances the quality of care through observation and communication with members of the health care team.
Provides creative, engaging, and culturally appropriate activities.
Facilitates structured group activities to foster peer interaction and socialization.
Assists with activities for special occasions and holidays.
Assures that areas of responsibility remain safe, comforting, therapeutic, and healing environments where inpatients and their families can express, master and control their current hospitalization.
Actively engages in program development and collaboration with other team members.
Provides quality play programs by continuously assessing, intervening and evaluating to assure play programs are based upon patient needs.
Continually evaluates effectiveness and delivery of programs with volunteers (as volunteer programming develops) and supporting staff with regards to days, times and locations of play programming.
Identifies patient care needs through Child Life Specialist report.
Maintains open and regular communication with Child Life Specialists and Patient Care Staff to ensure patient needs are being met.
Provides appropriate playgroup interventions based on developmental levels, and acuity of identified
patients.
Assists child life specialist in identifying and providing services to meet the developmental and emotional needs of siblings.
Advocates for the needs of children and families while performing duties in play and activity rooms.
Provides family centered care by including and empowering all family members to participate in programs.
Maintains up to date knowledge of local policies and best practice guidance pertaining to safe toy selection and provision and personal competence in use of the patient provided activity materials.
Essential Function 2Supports initiatives and activities related to program growth and development, patient engagement, child friendly environments, and professional behaviors associated with play programming and the Child Life Services team.
Serves as a professional role model for staff and is an advocate for patients and their families.
Works within the interdisciplinary team to develop, deliver and improve creative play programming ideas to enhance patient and family experience.
Establishes and maintains effective relationships with children and families.
Consistently partners with family members to ensure child life programming best meets patient and family needs.
Provides ongoing information to families about services available.
Assists with special projects intended to support patient and family centered care.
Reports any identified risks/safety issues to Supervisor, Child Life Services and/or unit child life specialist or CNL as appropriate.
Provides general oversight of playroom ensuring patients, visitors, staff, students and volunteers follow appropriate hospital policy & procedures while utilizing the playroom.
Delegates appropriate tasks to volunteers in areas of responsibility.
Demonstrates transcultural principles in child life practice.
Effectively communicates within the interdisciplinary team to ensure patient needs are being met.
Treats colleagues, patients, and visitors with dignity and respect at all times.
Actively welcomes and provides support and guidance to new staff/students on the unit. Participates in staff and/or volunteer retention activities.
Assists with record keeping to ensure department KPI's and organizational guidelines are being met.
Maintains a professional demeanor at all times.

Follows all Hospital related policies and procedures.
Maintains confidentiality of patients and families at all times
Essential Function 3Maintains patient activity areas, equipment and supplies in a safe, clean, efficient and fiscally responsible manner.
Prepares and maintains a safe, inviting, and developmentally responsive play environment appropriate for patients and families.
Ensures that playrooms and activity areas continually offer a variety of appropriate, engaging, stimulating materials for patients and families.
Ensures that department resources, playrooms, and activity areas are maintained appropriately and cleaned per hospital guidelines, adhering to MOPH standards.
Ensures that infection control procedures are adhered to at all times and provides assistance to the Department in this regard. This would include wiping down table surfaces, toy washing, and acting as liaison with Housekeeping and Infection Control staff.
Continuously monitors inventory of equipment/supplies and ensures fiscally responsible ordering of supplies.
Maintains accountability for sound recommendation and decisions to support ongoing programming
Demonstrates fiscal responsibility in the use of all resources.
Organizes, takes inventory of, and orders departmental supplies as needed.
Maintains general stock levels and orders stock and non-stock supplies.
Maintenance of equipment and supplies.

In view of the evolving needs and opportunities within Sidra, this position may be required to perform other duties as assigned and reporting relationships may vary. QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS - SELECTION CRITERIA
ESSENTIAL
Education
Minimum of two years' post-secondary education in Child Life, Child Development, early childhood/elementary education, nursery nurse, or related field;
Experience
2+ years' experience directly working with children and families in a variety of settings (schools, daycares, camps, etc.)
Job Specific Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of Child Life principles and practices.
Demonstrated ability to apply and integrate knowledge and skills into practice
Demonstrated ability to work with children newborn to adolescent
Demonstrated ability to interact with patients, families, hospital staff, volunteers and outside agencies in a professional and appropriate manner
Demonstrated ability to work independently, following directions of Supervisor.

Sidra Medicine is a 400-bed women's and children's hospital, medical education and biomedical research center in Doha, Qatar. The hospital first opened its outpatient facility in 2016, followed by its inpatient hospital in January 2018. Qatar Foundation, a quasi-government organization, allotted a massive $7.9 billion budget for the hospital's construction. It first selected the center's contractors in 2008 but in 2014 assigned new contractors to complete the project. Biomedical research first began at Sidra in 2015. Outpatient care facilities and services were inaugurated in May 2016; as of 2018 there are at least 50 outpatient facilities. Throughout 2017, more than 25,000 people were treated at the hospital's outpatient clinic. On 14 January 2018, Sidra launched its inpatient hospital with 400 beds, treating 10 patients on its initial day of opening. The hospital is expected to become fully commissioned sometime in 2018, after the construction of an emergency department and the addition of further services.
